Orthodontics is a branch in dentistry, where dentist treat the improper bite and crooked teeth. In orthodontic treatment, the dentist are concerned with full facial esthetics, not only the teeth. Orthodontic treatment can help straighten the teeth, close gaps between teeth, correct an improper bite and bring teeth and lips in proper alignment. In some cases, if orthodontic treatment is performed at a younger age, it can assist in proper growth of jaws.  Orthodontic treatment is performed not only for cosmetic purposes, to have beautifully aligned teeth but also in long run it proves beneficial for good dental health by aligning the teeth. People have different problems like crowding, crossbite, deepbite, open bite, spacing problems for which they get orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic treatment is done using appliances, which may be fixed or removable.  Fixed braces (brackets) are type of appliances which are attached to the teeth to align them.  It may be a long treatment as teeth have to be shifted in the proper position. It can take up to two or more years depending on the severity of the problem. Once the brackets are removed, usually the patient is advised to wear a retainer to support the new alignment of teeth.

Braces can be done for children as well as adults, in fact one out of every five patient today is an adult who wants straighter teeth and attractive smile.
